Bible Reading for Dyslexics

The following is taken from a recent post on my facebook page, however, I’m excited to expound on what I find on Bible reading with Dyslexia as well as Dyslexia in general in the future. Wanted to get this up right away in case it might help someone : )
Piggy-backing on my Highly Sensitive Person FB post, I wanted to share this:
I’ve tried to be honest about how while I love certain passages and learning all I can, I don’t love reading the Bible on my own.
While talking to an awesome woman at the #momheartconference last month, I learned some great suggestions for reading the Bible when dyslexia is an issue*. How had I never thought to look into that?!
There’s a cool version in the UK of the Psalms and Mark, but I wanted to find an entire Bible that I could use. Google, Amazon, and two book stores later, I am so stinkin’ thrilled.
Seek Find is on Amazon and the reviews are so heart-warming. It’s for any reading or English language related difficulty. I like it for it’s:
•Easy language, but not as whimsical as the Message version (strings of abstract words disrupt focus for concrete thinkers);
•Slightly off-white pages (cream colored is better, fyi);
•Text on the other side of the page barely shows through.
I read this morning without a furrowed brow and tense shoulders; Without having to go over a sentence or paragraph multiple times for comprehension, before getting into contemplation. After Nate woke up, I read aloud from Ecclesiastes and only switched words/stumbled every column (if that) instead of every paragraph.
What-what?! Hello, hope. : )
*I didn’t realize this ‘was a real thing’ until I was 21 and Nate picked up on it and researched it for me – I thought I just sucked at reading so, for the most part, I didn’t like to. I got good grades and left it at that. I also believed the common myth that dyslexia was limited to switching or jumbling letters around.#natershoutout

Elimination Communication: What it is and Where we’re at (14 month Update)

In the past few days, my 14 month old* has told us when she needs to use the restroom several times.
When Nate 1st brought up elimination communication (EC) I flat out said “No. No! Ain’t no way.” (Hmmm sounds familiar – giving up the microwave, relocating to Texas, strawbale homes . . .)
That was back in January of 2013 – a month before we found out about Autumn – we were on birth control and thought a baby was 4 years away. “Ugh, ok, maybe he’ll forget about it or at least lose interest by then?”
O Morgan, you poor, naive girl.

Last week with and for Autumn we:
Pumped up ASL, using mostly these words
Car
Book
Play
More
All Done
Diaper
Sleep
Mom
Dad
Eat
Drink
and continuing on with “Nummies” and “Potty.”
After two days, she was smiling and excited with the word/sign. I think she knew something was coming next. That’s awesome! Babies are so much smarter than we know 🙂

I started implementing more Montessori ideas. I know this is a far cry from Montessori materials, but I’m trying to just go with the flow and the principles until budget allows:

Low shelves; variety of “open-ended” toys, neatly arranged; safe environment to explore; little-to-no interruptions from the ‘rents = )
After I set it all up she was like “O! an envelope!” and I was like “O great!” Haha – but she’s been loving it. Last weekend she played for like 50 minutes BY HERSELF! Her dad and I were sitting on the floor in the middle of the room talking to each other, acknowledging her when she made eye contact but mostly just let her be. She came over for a bout 5 mintues halfway through but yeah, I’m hoping this mindful parenting stuff helps her to really think about things from her own perspectives. Which leads me to . . .
~
Got serious about REI in our home.
From diaper changes, to independent play (around 50 the other day!), to how we talk to her (using full sentences “Would you like the red ball?” instead of just focusing on teaching her a single word, “ball”; using pronouns instead of saying “Mommy’s going to . . . “; telling her what’s going to happen next, etc), and not showing her what an object is for/how to do something – but allowing her the chance to discover it for herself (sounds easy, but I struggle with it!).
Started reading books together more. SoOoOo cute when she starts to giggle when she sees the book coming . . .
~
Started *trying* to get her to take dessicated liver – she’s not a fan. (Can you blame her?) But her iron is low and Nate wants is to try natural food-based ways 1st as their easiest on a little tummy and most readily absorbed by their systems.
~
And working on a routine. We mostly do the same thing everyday, so this was more for me 🙂

Wait what?! Can this really be happening?!

I’m writing this with a 15lb Fall Baby asleep across my lap and HGTV paused on our projector. I cannot believe that we’re moving across the country (North to South, at least) in exactly 49 days.
1500 miles are about to separate me from my North East Ohio security blanket. 49 days away from embarking on a dream that started not even a year into our 4-year marriage.
2 college graduations and a baby later, it’s finally happening. Well, Part 1 of 5, anyway.
Some think we’re foolish.
Others might say “crazy”.
Most are just wondering how it’ll all turn out.
And a few think it’s amazing. They’re the ones rooting for us. Praying on our behalf as we seek a drastically different life: centered on His Kingdom and righteousness.
I’m excited.
I’m terrified.
I can’t wait to get started.
(Well, minus getting back to packing).
Let’s do this.
